Personal Watercraft Riding Tips

Personal Watercraft Riding Tips

A personal watercraft (PWC) is like the motorcycle of the water. It refers to a vessel equipped with an inboard motor to be mobilized by a rider, whether sitting, standing or kneeling. It can be used by an individual and even by a group of people since it can come with single or multi-passenger seats.

A PWC, more commonly known as a jet ski, provides a new and exciting way to have fun and enjoy the water, and it is easy to learn how to use it. Here are some of the basics to help get you started:

  1. Know your PWC before using it. Similar to land vehicles, your PWC will come with a manual that will provide you some basic instructions on how to properly handle it, as well as maintain it. It also includes safety tips to ensure that you remain in control and out of danger while riding your jet ski.

  2. For your utmost safety, make sure that your PWC is equipped with an off-throttle steering capability. One model that has this feature is BRP Manila’s Sea Doo, which is installed with a sensor that recognizes abrupt releases to assist the driver when turning. This feature comes in handy for a more controlled steering, and to avoid collisions.

  3. Always wear your safety gears when riding the Jet Ski. Specifically, coast-guard-approved life jackets must be worn at all the times. For your ultimate comfort and convenience, wear a proper wetsuit.

  4. Don’t forget to bring required safety equipment on board while riding. This includes a fire extinguisher, safety lanyards and signaling devices, among others.

  5. Keep a safe distance from other riders. Keep in mind that other watercrafts have different speed than yours and maintaining proper distance will keep you and others safe.

  6. It is important to know the local waterway regulations imposed for water vehicles and abide by them. This will keep you out of possible dangers that you might encounter.

  7. Ensure that they are registered in an authorized organization. Know that PWCs are required to make their registration number and validation decals visible.

  8. Learn how to play with the waves. When the waves are about to attack you, be ready and lift up a little to help you win the strikes. However, avoid big boats and congested areas when doing this.

  9. Practice makes perfect. Schedule more practices until you become comfortable with the controls, pedals, steering and overall Jet Ski operation. You can also learn tricks and techniques from knowledgeable riders. Companies like Sea Doo Club Philippines can provide you exciting water-skiing trips from Manila bay to Corregidor while also learning how to better use PWCs.

  10. Safety is always a priority. If possible, you can enroll in boat safety courses, even ones that are online. These will come in useful to protect you from possible hazards while on the water.
